Visual investigation: Oregon wildfires - OPB

After wildfires destroyed their Oregon town, residents blame utility company.

Entire towns burned in Oregon’s Santiam Canyon when wildfires erupted over Labor Day weekend in 2020. One of them was Gates. But were wildfires to blame, or power lines? Despite high wind warnings, Pacific Power chose not to shut off electricity in the canyon. Now more than 100 people have joined class action lawsuits against the utility.

The investigation was nominated for a regional Emmy for Long-form Environmental Reporting.
